A Tale of Two Kitties

Two young sister cats got outside and could not be found. I didn’t have my cat traps available so I had to improvise. The owners and I set up a feeding station on the top of the cat tower which was placed next to the house. I pointed my trail camera at the baited cat tree.

Then we waited. A couple hours later, one of the cats showed up to eat. I called owner and told her to calmly open the door and see if the cat would come inside. I was amazed to hear that she walked inside followed by her sister! The two kitties were safe.

Mason

Here’s a post to give owners hope and encouragement to keep up the search for lost cats.

On June 21 Mason - a 1 yr old cat got outside while his owners were on vacation. The sitter searched to no avail. His owners returned from vacation and began their search for him.

They put up signs , handed out flyers, went door to door and put food, water, and some worn clothes out. They posted in the community Facebook group where someone recommended they contact a local lost pet recovery volunteer. They emailed the volunteer who came out with a trap and cameras.

A couple neighbors thought they saw Mason in their yards briefly shortly after he went missing.

In middle of night on June 26, he was photographed by the trail camera. Mason stuck his head in the trap, sniffed it, and disappeared again.

Twice a day every day, his owners climbed the steep hill behind their house to rebait the trap and put fresh water next to it.

The volunteer got tons of photos all night of mice in and on the trap. Every time the camera notified the volunteer of a new photo, the volunteer woke up and checked each photo hoping to see Mason. Curiously, no animals except mice visited the trap deep in the woods.

Then a brutal heat wave hit and still no Mason. With all streams dried up, where was he getting water? He wasn’t showing up for water at the trap. Still his owners climbed up the steep hill twice a day to put fresh food and water out for him.

There were camera connection issues due to the location. A couple times everything needed to be moved for better satellite signals. The trap had to be monitored constantly.

This morning July 22, the cameras weren’t sending photos when suddenly a flurry of photos came through all at once. Expecting to see more mice, the volunteer opened the app to view the photos. Her heart stopped! Mason was in the trap calmly waiting for someone to come get him.

Mason was gone 1 month and he is home because his dedicated family kept at it every day. Sometimes it seemed futile, but they kept going.

Mason is home safe now. His family and I didn’t give up. We got him.
